What's New from Kathie?

I've added a new section on the bottom half of the home page, "The World Would Be a Better Place If..." and I'll be adding to the list on a regular basis, so check back often. I'd like to add your ideas to the list. We can make the changes that ensure children and adults with disabilities live the lives of their dreams!

You know the adage—those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Is a lack of knowing disability history the reason some people are going backwards and repeating the mistakes of the past, such as creating more "special (segregated)" programs, activities, classrooms, etc. for children and/or adults with developmental disabilities? Even if one doesn't know history, it seems that trying to walk in someone else's shoes would stop us in our tracks before creating more segregation. Or couldn't we be guided by the simplicity of the "golden rule"—treating others the way we would want to be treated? If you haven't already, I hope you'll sign up for the Disability is Natural free Newsletter—click here to sign up.

In the coming weeks and months, I'll be presenting in Virginia, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, South Dakota, Maryland, Texas, Delaware, West Virginia, Missouri, and New Hampshire. Click here for more info about my presentations.

I hope the new ways of thinking in all the articles on this site are helpful to you! Please let me know what issues you think need more attention; click here to contact me.

Revolutionary ... Life-Changing ... An Eye-Opener ... Thought-Provoking

These are some of the words people use to describe my presentations. I have fun during my presentations—and you will, too! I share personal stories and lots of humor, question the status quo and conventional wisdom, and help participants reclaim their common sense, in the hope that all people with developmental disabilities can live the lives of their dreams, included in all areas of society!

Kathie should speak to every organization, group, and government in the world. Her presentation is a work of philosophy, art, and activism! Nevada conference participant

I believe each person who has been diagnosed with something we call a "disability" has strengths, gifts, and talents, and when we focus on those—instead of the diagnosis—great outcomes are possible! Since the way we think drives the way we act, we must begin with a change in our attitudes and perceptions—and the words we use—about individuals with disabilities. I also believe the inclusion of people with disabilities can best be accomplished when they move from clienthood to citizenship. This can occur when individuals with disabilities and their families move away from dependence on special services and begin accessing the abundant supply of natural supports and generic services in their communities. And everyone has an important role to play in this effort!

Since 1991, I've presented hundreds of keynotes and in-depth workshops at conferences in over forty-five states and in Canada, for audiences of parents of children with disabilities, adults with disabilities, service providers, educators, and other professionals. In addition, I've consulted with disability organizations, human service agencies, and educators; coordinated conferences; and developed training curricula.

Your inspiring presentation closed our conference on just the right note, and our participants were raving about you...We're delighted you were able to join us and know that you'll be coming back to New York State before long. Ann Hardiman, Executive Director, NYSACRA

I'm enthusiastic, positive, and passionate about ensuring children and adults with disabilities live real lives, fully included in their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. The commonsense strategies I share can help us achieve this critically important goal. In addition to on-site, in-person presentations, I also provide teleseminars and private consultation for individuals, groups, schools, and other organizations.
