It's time to celebrate the abilities, strengths, and gifts of children and adults with disabilities!

The Abilities Box is six-inches square (foldable for portability, if needed), with a clear plastic sleeve on each side. One sleeve holds a card personalized with the individual's first name; the other sleeves hold your choice of three different messages from the Design Gallery (above). Alternatively, you can place a picture of the person in one of the sleeves, as shown in the photo (that's my cute son, Benjamin, when he was five!).

Each box is topped with a multi-colored, spiral bow. On the inside, you'll find ten small personalized "Gift" cards nestled in white tissue paper. On each card, you can write a brief description of the "Gifts" of the person---his or her strengths, abilities, interests, and dreams.

Begin an IEP/IPP meeting by opening the Abilities Box and sharing the strengths of a child or adult with a disability! You, or the person with a disability, can take out each card and share the contents with others at the meeting. Here's another idea: pass the Abilities Box around, and let each person take out a card and read a strength to the group!

The Abilities Box can also be used as a way of introducing a child or adult on the first day of school or work, or for any other new situation when it's important to share the person's strengths and abilities with others!

Our words reflect the way we think, so let's get rid of descriptors like "mentally handicapped, physically disabled, mentally retarded, learning disabled" and other words that focus on the condition instead of the person. People First Language promotes dignity and respect for all!
